ROCKVILLE, MD (November 30, 2022) — Mayor Brandon Scott vetoed Bill 22-0292, which would have enhanced the pension benefits of the city’s elected officials by making them eligible for a full pension after a mere 8 years in office.
MPPI President & CEO Christopher Summers issued the following statement:
We applaud Mayor Scott’s wise decision to veto this ill-conceived bill. Its hasty passage by the City Council in the days before the Thanksgiving holiday showed that the Council members are too focused on themselves rather than their constituents. Baltimore residents should be thankful, though, that their mayor was willing to stand up to his fellow politicians’ self-interest. Hopefully, the mayor and City Council can now get back to doing the basics that residents need of them, such as improving public safety, infrastructure, and city finances.
